How Shade Affects a Rooftop Solar Design

Shading is one of the conditions considered during a solar site assessment. Its effect depends on where, when and how much shade falls on the array.

Identify shade sources

Trees, chimneys, neighboring structures, dormers and roof features may cast shade at different times of the year. A design should make its shade assumptions clear.

Panel-level electronics

Microinverters optimize conversion at the module level and may help manage varied panel conditions. They do not make shade disappear or guarantee a specific production outcome.

Plan for changes

Consider tree growth, maintenance, roof layout and practical access before approving a design. Ask how the production estimate accounts for current conditions.
