How Is a Home Solar System Sized?

Solar system sizing begins with the household’s electricity consumption, then accounts for site conditions, equipment and project constraints.

Start with actual usage

Annual kWh use helps estimate how much electricity a system might produce relative to your consumption. The estimate should state the time period and assumptions used.

Review the roof and site

Usable roof area, roof orientation, pitch, shade, condition and electrical requirements all affect layout. A satellite estimate can help with early planning but does not replace on-site checks where needed.

Compare design assumptions

Ask about module count, equipment model, estimated annual production, expected consumption offset and what happens if utility rules or roof conditions change. Estimates are not production guarantees.
